I have a health conditions call PCOS. I don't usually get my menstrual period. I was given fluconazole from my doctor yesterday after finding out I have a yeast infection. An hour after taking the medication I started to have pain of starting my period. It's been 24 hours since I've taken the pill and I'm still in pain. But I have not started bleeding. Can someone please help answer my question.

This happened to me as well. I have take this medication 3 times in the past... 1 pill every 3rd day..3 pills total and had no issues. I just did a round of antibiotics and needed to take it again for a yeast infection. As soon as I took the second pill my period started. Just to be VERY CLEAR... I have taken birth control for yeeeeears to STOP MY PERIOD. I am STILL taking the birth control to STOP my period... yet I got one anyway and this is day like 8. It's very on and off... seems slightly heavier at night and almost non existent other times. Very bright... when... given that I don't have periods, one would think it should be VERY dark (old blood)... so this VERY MUCH IS a side effect caused by this medication. Like I said I have taken It several times and nothing happened... but it DID happen this time in spite of me still continuing the birth control
I found this question as I was looking for an answer to my situation. Within hours of taking fluconazole I started my period 2 weeks early. I’ve been searching for answers trying to figure out what caused this. The bleeding came on slow at first and different than my regular cycle; More red with clear fluid and near constant mild lower abdominal cramping. It’s now day 3 and fairly heavy. After reading these other comments with very similar situations, it sounds as if I’ve found my answer. Just because it’s not listed as a side effect, doesn’t mean it isn’t. If it did not happen during the trials or get officially reported, it will not be listed. Sure sounds like this needs reported as a possible side effect. This happened once before a few years ago after taking medication, but I did not question medication side effects. Now I’m going to look back through medical records to see if I had taken this at that time as well. I did report it to my doctor, so there would be a documented correlation.
If you're reading this and wondering why fluconazole would make you start your period. I have news, especially for "PCOS" sufferers. High cortisol levels can cause menstrual cycle disturbances. In fact, if cortisol levels are too high, your menstrual cycle will stop. Fluconazole lowers Cortisol levels. Cushing's disease and Cushing's syndrome cause high Cortisol levels and often go undiagnosed and can be mistaken for PCOS and many other diseases. If you took fluconazole and started your period, you need to insist that your doctors run tests for Cushing's (Cushing's disease is caused by a tumor in the pituitary gland or on the adrenal gland. Cushing's syndrome usually happens in patients with a history of long term steroid (prednisone) use.
My story started when I gained 12lbs in a week. Then my ankles swelled, really my whole body swelled. Then I developed ringworms. My doctor was shocked at how swollen I was. She gave me fluconazole for the ringworms and Lasix for the swelling. Tests showed perfect heart and kidney function. I thought I was going into menopause, I hadn't had a period for more than 6 months, I was gaining weight but not eating more. I took the fluconazole and started my period. Then my swelling started going down and I felt better. My energy surged. When I told my doctor the fluconazole brought my period back, and brought the swelling down
and gave me my energy back, she ran the tests for Cushing's. I am blessed with a great PCP, not everyone is as lucky. Be your own advocate. There are a lot of "overweight, type 2 diabetics who probably have Cushing's and haven't been diagnosed. BTW My doctor said lots of patients come to her with a PCOS diagnosis, but they truly have Cushing's. Hope this helps.
I started this medication yesterday morning, and got my period last night - heavy right from the start. I am over weight and usually get a period every 3 months (and last month I had it). Went searching for answers and found this forum. Coincidence? I am not thinking so.
It did to me! Twice . Strange
I took this med for 21 days. I then started my period a week early and it lasted 12 days. I’m now having other stomach issues. I’m not sure if related or not.
I took the pill Tuesday and started my period today which is really weird because my period is 3 week early and that has never happened before can someone come explain this
I was getting treated for a yeast infection and took the pill this pasy monday them the other on Thursday and my pd started on Monday. Is that normal? My menstrual cycle was predicted for next week

I have PCOS too. No, fluconazole does not induce menstruation. Stomach pains are listed as a side effect of the drug on the drug website and medicine insert. It indicates if you have this side effect, you should notify your doctor. If you did start your period, it could have been just a coincidence. Most of us with PCOS know that it is going to come if and when it wants to, if at all, but we don't know for sure when. You probably had a reaction to the medicine. If you still have the symptoms, I would contact my doc asap.
