Tumil-K Powder

This treatment applies to the following species:
Manufacturer: Virbac

(Potassium Gluconate, USP)

For Veterinary Use Only

DIN 02223627

DIN 02223635

Description

Each TUMIL-K® Tablet contains 468 mg of potassium gluconate, equivalent to 2 mEq of elemental potassium. Each 0.65 grams (1/4 level teaspoon) of TUMIL-K® Powder contains 468 mg of potassium gluconate USP, equivalent to 2 mEq of elemental potassium, in a palatable meat flavoured base.

Tumil-K Powder Indications

For the management of potassium deficiency (hypokalemia) in cats.

Contraindications

Do not administer to cats with acute, oliguric, anuric or very advanced renal failure. Do not administer in other diseases where high potassium levels may be encountered, such as adrenal insufficiency, acute dehydration, urethral obstruction.

Dosage and Administration

The usual dose is 1 TUMIL-K Tablet or 1/4 level teaspoon (0.65 g) of TUMIL-K Powder (2 mEq potassium) per 10 lbs (4.5 kg) body weight twice a day. For cats with severe hypokalemia (< 3 mEq/L), a higher initial dose up to 10 mEq/day in divided doses may be required. Serum potassium levels should be monitored at regular intervals and the dose adjusted accordingly. Cats with chronic renal failure often require lifelong maintenance at a dose of 2 to 4 mEq/day. TUMIL-K Powder can be administered directly on food.

Tumil-K Powder Caution

Use with caution in the presence of cardiac disease, particularly in digitalized patients.

Adverse Reactions

Adverse reactions and undesirable side effects, including hyperkalemia, have not been reported in hypokalemic cats treated with TUMIL-K Tablets or Powder at the recommended dose range.

Overdosage: The clinical signs of hyperkalemia include muscle weakness, trembling and typical ECG changes. An accurate diagnosis and regular monitoring of serum potassium levels are important in ensuring that iatrogenic hyperkalemia does not develop in treated cats. At the recommended dose range, the risk of hyperkalemia is minimal. Acute accidental overdosage has not been reported in cats but can cause life-threatening cardiotoxicity and should be treated vigorously with fluid therapy and non-potassium-sparing diuretics.
