Tetanus Antitoxin, Concentrated/Purified, Equine OriginThis treatment applies to the following species:
THE PRODUCT: This product is a purified, concentrated antitoxin, primarily immunoglobulin in nature. It is prepared from the blood of specifically hyperimmunized horses. It is recommended for use in horses as an aid in the prevention and treatment of tetanus due to Clostridium tetani.
This product was licensed prior to the requirement to establish a minimum age for use. The exact duration of passive immunity is unknown, but literature states 7-14 days. Safety in pregnant animals is unknown.
Tetanus is caused by a neurotoxin (poison) produced by growth of Clostridium tetani, an anaerobic microorganism, in necrotic tissue.
Tetanus Antitoxin is recommended for use when a non-immunized animal suffers a deep wound that may have been contaminated with soil, following castration or docking, and other situations where tetanus infection has been a problem.
Directions For Use
Do not vaccinate within 21 days before slaughter. Shake well before use. Use entire contents when first opened. Store at 2-8° C. Do not freeze. Do not mix with other products.
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION: One dose of 1,500 units (2 ml) administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly in the neck is the recommended dose followed by a second dose in 7 days for deep wounds or abrasions.
Large doses of Tetanus Antitoxin may provide beneficial response in horses already affected with tetanus, but success of treatment is not assured. For treatment administer 10,000 to 100,000 units. However, safety at the 100,000 unit level (67 doses or 134 ml) is not assured.
Repeat as considered necessary.
Annual Tetanus Toxoid vaccination is recommended in healthy horses. If horses have been vaccinated for Tetanus Toxoid within 12 months, a Tetanus Toxoid booster is preferred over Tetanus Antitoxin for prophylaxis when horse has penetrating wounds.
PrecautionsAnaphylactoid reaction may occur following administration of products of this nature. If noted, administer adrenalin or equivalent. The use of equine serum has been associated with hepatitis (Theiler’s Disease). If user has questions, consult a veterinarian.
OTHER INFORMATION: Vaccination with Tetanus Toxoid is recommended for healthy domestic animals not infected with tetanus to establish an active immunity for prevention against disease. See Tetanus Toxoid insert for full directions.
Each serial of product is tested for purity, safety and antitoxin unitage as required by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
In case of human exposure, consult a physician. Contains thimerosal as a preservative.
