Revibe Dosage And Administration: For Oral Use Only

Dissolve contents of this pouch (73 g) in 2L of warm water and administer the entire volume (2L) by nursing bottle or stomach tube twice daily as necessary. In vitro studies indicating that the electrolyte solution does not interfere with milk clotting suggest that milk deprivation is unnecessary if the calf is willing to drink. Discard solution if not used within 24 hours. Calves that are able to nurse following rehydration with intravenous fluids can also be switched to this oral electrolyte product.

Contraindications

Do not use in cases of upper gastrointestinal obstruction or in moribund animals. Do not administer to animals with severe dehydration (greater than 8%), moderate to severe acidosis (pH <7.2) such as animals with signs of depression, incoordination, severe weakness demonstrating recumbency, absence of a suckle reflex or rapidly progressing dehydration.

CAUTIONS: A severely dehydrated and/or acidotic calf that refuses milk should be given intravenous bicarbonate and electrolytes only and any additional therapy required by the animal’s condition - Consult your veterinarian. Calves with reduced suck reflexes, or those unused to hand feeding, can be tube fed. As soon as a calf has been rehydrated and acidosis corrected, and is willing to drink, re-introduce milk and gradually decrease the amount of oral electrolyte solution given. If no improvement is seen within 24 hours, consult your veterinarian. There is little relationship between the degree of dehydration and the severity of acidosis in scouring calves; calves with light metabolic acidosis are mildly depressed, suffer from some degree of muscular weakness and will continue to show suckling drive; there is a relationship between the age of the calf, and the degree of acidosis, i.e. neonate calves of less than 8 days are more likely to suffer from mild to moderate acidosis, whereas calves older than 8 days demonstrating poor suckling drive and moderate to severe muscular weakness will often have severe bicarbonate deficits; it can also be estimated that calves who will be able to restore acid-base balance through oral fluids containing metabolizable alkalinizing bases will suffer from no more than a HCO3 deficit of 5 to 10 mmol/L.
