Psittimune PDV

This treatment applies to the following species:
Manufacturer: Ceva Biomune

Pacheco's Disease Vaccine, Inactivated Virus, Oil Emulsion

U.S. Vet. Lic. No.: 368

Contents: PSITTIMUNE® PDV is an inactivated virus vaccine adjuvinated in an oil emulsion for long acting immunity. The vaccine is used for the protection of selected psittacine birds against the infectious and fatal Pacheco's disease.

The vaccine has been carefully produced and has undergone purity, sterility, safety, efficacy and potency tests to meet Biomune's requirements and USDA regulations.

Psittimune PDV Indications

PSITTIMUNE® PDV is indicated for the vaccination of selected psittacine species to aid in the prevention of disease caused by Pacheco's virus infection.

Dosage and Administration

Allow the vaccine to reach ambient temperature, 65°-75°F, and shake well before and periodically during use. Vaccination is accomplished by using a syringe and a 21 to 23 gauge needle to administer 0.25 cc of the vaccine subcutaneously in smaller psittacines under 100 grams and either subcutaneously or intramuscularly in larger psittacines. The intramuscular injection site should be in the pectoral muscle mass being careful not to inject into a blood vessel or strike the breastbone. Aseptic technique should be followed using alcohol to clean the injection site and a new sterile syringe and needle between each bird.

See the package insert for complete information.

Precaution(s): Store in a refrigerator at 35°-45°F. Use the entire contents when first opened.

Caution(s): Vaccinate only healthy birds.

Oil emulsion vaccines may cause post-vaccination tissue reactions including swelling or granuloma formation at the site of injection. Certain cockatoo species may be more sensitive to these types of reactions. Such reactions may also be aggravated by improper vaccination technique. Further complications may result from the stress of handling birds associated with the vaccination procedure.

For veterinary use only.

Warning(s): Vaccinations should be completed at least four (4) weeks prior to the onset of egg production.

Discussion: The product is derived from an immunogenic psittacine herpesvirus and contains a virus isolated from a recent Pacheco's disease outbreak. Laboratory studies demonstrate that Biomune's vaccine virus has a broader antigenic spectrum than the classic Simpson-Hanley virus isolated in 1975. The vaccine virus is completely inactivated so there is no risk of introducing the disease into a bird collection by its use.
