Normal Equine SerumThis treatment applies to the following species:
Normal Serum, Equine Origin
U.S. Vet. Lic. No.: 188
Active Ingredient(s): The serum is prepared from the blood of normal, healthy horses. Antigenic substances are not administered to production animals for the purpose of stimulating antibody response. Thus, the final product is referred to as normal serum.
Contains phenol and thimerosal as preservatives.
Normal Equine Serum Indications
Indicated as an aid in the nonspecific treatment of equine infections and disease conditions.
Dosage and AdministrationInject subcutaneously, intramuscularly, or intravenously, 50 mL to 250 mL, depending upon the weight of the animal and the judgement of the veterinarian administering. Repeat doses may be given.
When to Vaccinate: NORMAL EQUINE SERUM is recommended for the nonspecific treatment of horses with anemia, haemorrhage, shock that may occur following injury, and for physically debilitating conditions for which blood enrichment is considered desirable.
Precaution(s): Store in the dark at 2-7°C.
Sterilize syringes and needles by boiling in clean water. Use the entire contents when first opened.
Caution(s): Anaphylactic reactions sometimes follow administration of products of this nature. If noted, administer adrenaline or an equivalent drug.
A condition referred to as serum hepatitis infrequently occurs in horses. The literature associates this with the injection of biologics containing equine serum or tissue. The connection is based, at the present time, upon supposition and not upon scientific evidence as efforts to experimentally reproduce such a condition in horses have not been successful. It seems prudent, however, in view of the published implications, to make horse owners aware of it.
For veterinary use only.
Warning(s): Do not vaccinate within 21 days before slaughter.
Presentation: 100 mL and 250 mL vials.
