Free Choice Feeding

Use of a free choice device (ie. . . lamb bar) requires that the milk replacer solution be kept cold (about 40° F) to prevent overconsumption. Kids may need to be trained to suckle from nipples. However, they will readily adapt in a day or two.

General Recommendations

1. Keep all equipment used for mixing and feeding thoroughly cleaned.

2. Newborn kids should receive colostrum as soon after birth as possible (within 3-4 hours).

3. When hand-feeding by bottle or a shallow pan, the milk replacer should be about 90° to 100° F.

4. Provide fresh, clean water and a high quality dry feed on a free choice basis after kids are 7 days old.

5. If scouring occurs due to bacterial infection, kids may need treatment with an oral antibiotic. If scours persist, seek assistance from your local veterinarian.
