Modified Live Virus

Febrivac DIST

Lyophilisate and diluent for preparing a suspension for injection

Statement of the active substance and other ingredients:

103.7 - 105.2 TCID50*

(* culture infectious dose)

Excipients: culture medium, gelatine, traces of neomycin sulphate

Indication:

Active immunization of minks with an attenuated distemper virus, strain D 84/1 as an aid in the prevention of disease due to distemper virus.

The immune protection has been developed 21 days after vaccination and lasts at least 6 months. Revaccinate annually.

Contraindications

Do not use for

- clinically ill and weakened animals

- pregnant vixen

Adverse Reactions

At metaphylactic vaccination because of latently / acute distemper virus infections animal losses are possible.

Vaccination of pregnant vixen may have an adverse effect on pregnancy.

Infectious plasmocytosis (Aleutian Disease) can be activated in animal stock after vaccination against distemper and lead to higher animal loss, in particular when animals are immunized at age 6 to 12 weeks.

If you notice any serious effects or other effects not mentioned in this package leaflet, please inform your veterinarian.

Target species: Mink

Dosage, method of administration:

The freeze-dried vaccine is to be reconstituted with the corresponding amount of diluent.

All animals to be immunized are given a dose of 1 ml subcutaneously.

Kits younger than 10 weeks and known to have maternal antibodies should be given two injections at an interval of 4 - 6 weeks. Kits older than 10 weeks are to be given one vaccination. Breeding animals are to be immunized annually before the mating season begins.

The vaccination is to be repeated annually.

Pregnant vixen should not be vaccinated.

Advice on correct administration:

The vaccine can be better reconstituted using temperate diluent (+ 12 °C to + 15 °C).

The freeze-dried vaccine is to be dissolved with a part of the diluent and then completely given into the diluent bottle. For sterility reasons the enclosed transfer needle should be used.

Withdrawal period: Not applicable.

Special storage precautions:

Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Store in a refrigerator (2 °C - 8 °C). Protect from light. Do not freeze. Use immediately after reconstitution. Do not use this veterinary medicinal product after the expiry date which is stated on the label.

Special warnings:

Special precautions for use in animals

In case of anaphylactic reaction use epinephrine as symptomatic treatment. The live vaccine stimulates the development of an active immunity against distemper. A steady replication of vaccine virus is necessary for that.

Although a certain protective effect can be achieved within a short time after vaccination, a complete immunity cannot be expected before day 20 after vaccination.

The use of immunosuppressive drugs 14 days before or after vaccination against distemper can negatively influence the effectiveness of the vaccination. A passive immunization with a distemper immune serum within 14 days before the vaccination impedes the development of immunity.

No information is available on the safety and efficacy of this vaccine when used with any other veterinary medicinal product except the simultaneous locally separated use of FEBRIVAC 3-PLUS. A decision to use this vaccine before or after any other veterinary medicinal product therefore needs to be made on a case by case basis.

Do not mix with other vaccines, immunological or veterinary medicinal products.

Pregnancy and lactation

The safety of the vaccine has not been tested neither on pregnant nor lactating animals and can therefore not be recommended. Pregnant vixen should only be vaccinated under exceptional circumstances after consulting a veterinarian. A negative influence on the pregnancy cannot be excluded.

Special precautions to be taken by the person administering the veterinary medicinal product to animals

In the case of accidental self-injection, immediately seek the advice of a medical doctor and present the product leaflet or the label.

Special precautions for the disposal of unused product or waste materials

Any unused vaccine or waste materials should be disposed of in accordance with local requirements.

Immunological properties

The live vaccine stimulates the development of an active immunity against distemper. A steady replication of vaccine virus is necessary for that.

Although a certain protective effect can be achieved within a short time after vaccination, the complete immunity cannot be expected before day 20 after vaccination.

The presence of maternal antibodies in kits interferes with the vaccination. Progenies of immunized vixen should be vaccinated only at an age of 10 weeks.

In urgent cases, for instance if a metaphylactic vaccination in the livestock is necessary because of an acute infectious process, the kits can be vaccinated as young as 6 weeks of age.

In these cases a booster vaccination at 10 weeks of age is to be carried out to obtain a reliable immunity.

A repeat vaccination 6 months later reinforces the protective effect and leads to the development of immunity in the livestock.
