Duricol Chloramphenicol Capsules U.S.P. Indications

For oral treatment of the following conditions in dogs caused by susceptible micro-organisms:

Bacterial infections of the urinary tract caused by susceptible micro-organisms: Escherichia coli, A. aerogenes, hemolytic staphylococcus, Streptococcus spp., Corynebacterium renalis, Proteus vulgaris.

Bacterial pulmonary infections caused by susceptible micro-organisms: Brucella bronchiseptica, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus.

Secondary bacterial infections associated with canine distemper caused by susceptible micro-organisms: Brucella bronchiseptica, Streptococcus spp.

Bacterial enteritis caused by susceptible micro-organisms: E. coli, Proteus spp., Salmonella spp., Vibrio spp.

Appropriate supportive therapy should be used when indicated. Most susceptible infectious disease organisms will respond to chloramphenicol therapy in three to five days when the recommended dosage regimen is followed.

Laboratory tests should be conducted including in vitro culturing and susceptibility tests on samples collected prior to treatment.

Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic providing rapid clinical response and having therapeutic activity against a wide variety of pathogens including many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, rickettsiae, and certain of the larger viruses.

In vitro, chloramphenicol exerts its bacteriostatic action by inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible organisms. When administered orally in dogs, it is rapidly absorbed from the intestinal tract and diffuses readily into all body tissues, but at different concentrations. The highest concentrations are found in the liver and kidney of dogs indicating that these organs are the main routes of inactivation and excretion for the metabolites.

Duricol Chloramphenicol Capsules U.S.P. Dosage And Administration

Dogs: 25 mg per pound of body weight every six (6) hours for oral administration.

If a response to chloramphenicol therapy is not obtained within three (3) to five (5) days, discontinue its use and review the diagnosis. Also, a change of therapy should be considered.

Because of the potential for antagonism, chloramphenicol should not be administered simultaneously with penicillin or streptomycin.

Duricol Chloramphenicol Capsules U.S.P. Caution(s)

Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

In vitro tissue culture studies using canine bone marrow cells have demonstrated that extremely high concentrations of chloramphenicol inhibit both uptake of iron by the nucleated red cells and incorporation of iron into heme. Considering this, chloramphenicol should be administered cautiously to animals with hematopoietic dysfunction. The drug should be administered cautiously to animals with impaired kidney or liver functions.

Not for use in animals which are raised for food production.

Chloramphenicol products must not be used in meat, egg, or milk producing animals. The length of time that residues persist in milk or tissues has not been determined.

The product is for use in dogs only.

Chloramphenicol products should not be administered in conjunction with or two hours prior to the induction of general anesthesia with pentobarbital.

The safety of chloramphenicol products for use in animals maintained for breeding purposes has not been established.
