Calf Management Guidelines

1) Feed clean, high-quality maternal colostrum for the first 24 hours after birth to provide essential antibodies and other nutrients to the newborn calf. If maternal colostrum is unavailable or in short supply, feed a colostrum supplement or replacer as directed by your veterinarian.

2) Begin feeding calf milk replacer on day 2. Feed milk replacer at least twice daily at regular intervals.

3) Scrub and sanitize all feeding equipment daily between feedings. Care for your youngest calves first, and then older animals, then sick animals last to help minimize disease transmission.

4) A high-quality calf starter should be available at all times to the calf beginning in the first week. Provide fresh feed daily in a clean pail to maximize feed intake. Do not offer hay until after the calf is weaned from milk replacer.

5) Provide clean, fresh water at all times. Calves will not consume adequate amounts of dry feed without access to fresh water.

6) You may need to feed additional milk replacer during cold weather. If the temperature in the calf’s environment is below 50° F, he must expend energy to stay warm, and may benefit from an additional milk replacer feeding daily. Consult with your veterinarian for feeding recommendations.

7) Wean only a healthy calf that is consuming at least 2 to 3 pounds of starter feed daily for 3 or more consecutive days. Most calves will be ready to wean at about 6-12 weeks of age. Decrease to one bottle of milk replacer daily in the morning for 1 week before weaning completely. Avoid weaning during other major stress, such as long transport, dehorning, etc.

Mixing Directions

Mix 4 enclosed scoops (approximately 4 ounces by weight) of VetOne Calf Electrolyte powder into 2 quarts of warm (100° F) water using a wire whisk to ensure that it is completely dissolved.

Feeding Directions

Feed mixed VetOne Calf Electrolyte one to two times daily as needed during times of scours or other stress. Feed in between normal calf milk replacer feedings to provide the maximum amount of supplemental fluids and electrolytes. For best results, do not add to milk or milk replacer. Feed for no more than 3 consecutive days. If the calf does not improve during that time, or if it seems weak or is visibly dehydrated, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Every animal is an individual. Adjust amounts of feeds according to the calf’s body weight and appetite, and the environmental conditions. Consult with your veterinarian if you have questions.

Store dry VetOne Calf Electrolyte powder in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry place. Avoid leaving the package open for extended periods of time. Use within 1 year of manufacture whenever possible.
