United Therapeutics Could Triple Work Force

Drug maker Could Triple Work Force [the News & Observer, Raleigh, N.C.]

From News & Observer (Raleigh, NC) (February 15, 2011)

Feb. 15--Drug company United Therapeutics is planning a major expansion of its research-and-manufacturing facility in Research Triangle Park that would allow it to triple its local work force.

The expansion would give the Maryland company, which already has more than 100 jobs in RTP, the capacity to employ about 350 workers locally, said David Zaccardelli, executive vice president.

He declined to discuss the company’s hiring plans or how much it is investing in the expansion.

United Therapeutics wants to build a 177,000-square-foot expansion at its RTP campus, which encompasses 55 acres, as well as a 173,635-square-foot parking deck, according to the plans filed with the Durham City-County Planning Department.

The addition will increase the site’s ability to manufacture, package and label drugs, as well as its warehouse capacity, Zaccardelli said. Construction could begin in the next few months, pending regulatory approval, with completion aimed for sometime in 2012.

After opening its 200,000-square-foot research and manufacturing facility in RTP in early 2009, United won regulatory approval for two drugs that treat pulmonary hypertension, Tyvaso and Adcirca.

Tyvaso will be packaged and distributed at RTP, Zaccardelli said, and the company also is testing an oral treatment for pulmonary hypertension that would be manufactured, packaged and distributed out of RTP upon FDA approval. United Therapeutics already is manufacturing test doses of that experimental drug in RTP.

United Therapeutics generated $437.4 million in revenue for the nine months that ended Sept. 30 -- up 74 percent from the same period a year earlier.
