Merck Pledging Funds to Reduce Maternal Mortality

From Associated Press (July 11, 2012)

NEW YORK -- Merck & Co. said Wednesday it will pledge up to $25 million over eight years to reduce mortality in women giving birth.

Merck said the pledge will be matched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The company and the Gates Foundation announced the pledge at the London Summit on Family Planning. The funding is intended to support a U.N. goal that calls for a 75-percent reduction in maternal mortality and universal access to reproductive health by 2015.

It is also part of an effort to extend voluntary family planning services to another 120 million women and girls in the world’s poorest countries by 2020.

Merck, which is based in Whitehouse Station, N.J., said its collaboration with the Gates Foundation will focus on awareness and education about family planning services, improving supplies and resources, and working to increase support and access to family planning services.
