Dec. 15--Amgen CEO Kevin Sharer announced Thursday that he plans to retire at the end of 2012 after 20 years of service at the Thousand Oaks biotech drug company.

Amgen's chief operating officer, Robert Bradway, 48, will succeed Sharer on May 23, 2012. Sharer, 63, will remain chairman of the board of directors until the end of 2012, when he will retire from the board and company. Bradway will also succeed him as chairman.

"Amgen will be in good hands," Sharer said in a statement.

The retirement announcement came after markets closed.

Amgen also announced Thursday that a lead researcher, Roger Perlmutter, 59, will retire as executive vice president of research and development effective in February. He will be succeeded by Sean Harper, 49, who will be responsible for global research and development.
