Health Tip: At Risk for Muscle Cramps

-- A muscle cramp occurs when a contracted muscle can't relax, causing pain and tightness.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says these factors increase the risk of getting a muscle cramp:

  • Being a young child or infant.
  • Being age 65 or older.
  • Taking certain medications.
  • Being overweight.
  • Overexerting yourself.
  • Being an athlete, particularly in the pre-season before the body is fully conditioned.
