Health Tip: Before You Begin Breast-feeding

-- There's no doubt that breast-feeding benefits baby in ways that bottled formula can't, the American Academy of Pediatrics says. Breast milk is unrivaled in nutritional benefit and in its ability to help prevent infection.

The academy offers these suggestions to women who are about to begin breast-feeding:

  • Try to breast-feed as quickly as you can after the baby is born, as long as mom and baby are healthy and ready.
  • Seek the advice and help of hospital staff, and consult online and community resources when you get home.
  • First, concentrate on getting your baby to "latch" to your breast correctly.
  • Improper latching is unacceptable, as it can frustrate baby and become painful for mom.
