Eli Lilly and Co. announced plans this morning for a $140 million, 80,000-square-foot expansion of its insulin plant.
State and local officials were on hand at a 9 a.m. press conference detailing plans to increase the manufacture of insulin cartridges, which company officials said is geared to meet the growing diabetes demand in the U.S.
Construction, which will begin immediately, is expected to employ an average of 250 workers and be completed by March 2014. The site itself will be managed by 100 specialized technicians, scientists and engineers.

Eli Lilly and Co. will announce a multimillion-dollar expansion at its Indianapolis insulin manufacturing operations this morning.
The drug maker said the expanded facilities will manufacture high-tech insulin cartridges to meet growing U.S. demand by people with diabetes.
It will be the first expansion to Lilly’s Indianapolis insulin manufacturing operations in more than two decades.
Several state and city politicians will be on hand for the 9 a.m. announcement at the Lilly Technology Center campus at 1555 S. Harding St.
