What is Ortho D (cholecalciferol and folic acid)?
Cholecalciferol is vitamin D3. Vitamin D is important for the absorption of calcium from the stomach and for the functioning of calcium in the body.
Folic acid is vitamin B9, or folate. Vitamin B9 helps your body produce and maintain new cells. Folic acid also helps prevent several types of birth defects when taken by pregnant women.
Cholecalciferol and folic acid is a combination medicine used in people who do not get enough of these vitamins in their diets to maintain adequate health.

What is the most important information I should know about Ortho D (cholecalciferol and folic acid)?
Follow all directions on your medicine label and package. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies, and all medicines you use.
What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Ortho D (cholecalciferol and folic acid)?
You should not use this medicine if you have ever had an allergic reaction to vitamin D or folic acid, or if you have:
high levels of calcium in your blood (hypercalcemia);
high levels of vitamin D in your body (hypervitaminosis D); or
any condition that makes it hard for your body to absorb nutrients from food (malabsorption).
Folic acid is sometimes used in combination with other medications to treat pernicious anemia. However, cholecalciferol and folic acid will not treat Vitamin B12 deficiency and will not prevent possible damage to the spinal cord. Take all of your medications as directed by your doctor.
To make sure cholecalciferol and folic acid is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
kidney disease; or
a thyroid disorder.
Ask a doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Your dose needs may be different during pregnancy or while you are nursing.
Do not give this medicine to a child without medical advice.
How should I take Ortho D (cholecalciferol and folic acid)?
Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
Cholecalciferol and folic acid is usually taken as one capsule daily.
Follow your doctor's dosing instructions very carefully.
Cholecalciferol and folic acid may be only part of a complete program of treatment that also includes a special diet. Follow the diet plan created for you by your doctor or nutrition counselor.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.
What should I avoid while taking Ortho D (cholecalciferol and folic acid)?
Follow your doctor's instructions about any restrictions on food, beverages, or activity.
Ortho D (cholecalciferol and folic acid) side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite;
Less serious side effects may be more likely, and you may have none at all.
