What is benzgalantamine?
Benzgalantamine is used in adults to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer's type dementia.
Benzgalantamine may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Benzgalantamine side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficult breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash with blistering and peeling).
Benzgalantamine may cause serious side effects. Call your doctor at once if you have:

weak pulse, slow or uneven heart rate, dizziness, a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
-
little or no urination;
-
seizures; or
-
stomach bleeding--bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.

Warnings
Use only as directed. Tell your doctor if you use other medicines or have other medical conditions or allergies.
Before taking this medicine
You should not use benzgalantamine if you are allergic to it.
Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had:
-
a heart condition such as "AV block", slow heartbeats;
-
stomach ulcers or bleeding;
-
if you are taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen;
-
a history of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); or
-
liver or kidney disease.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
How should I take benzgalantamine?
Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the medicine exactly as directed.
Benzgalantamine is usually taken twice per day, you may take benzgalantamine with or without food.
Swallow the tablet whole and do not crush, chew, or break it.
Drink plenty of liquids while you are taking benzgalantamine.
If you stop using this medicine for longer than 3 days, do not start it again without your doctor's advice.
Tell your doctor if you have a planned surgery.
You may need medical tests, chest X rays or breathing tests while you are using this medicine.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Benzgalantamine dosing information
Usual Adult Dose for Alzheimer's Disease:
Initial dose: 5 mg orally twice a day
Maintenance dose: Increase to 10 mg orally twice a day after at least 4 weeks of therapy, based on response and tolerability
Maximum dose: 15 mg orally twice a day after at least 4 weeks of treatment at 10 mg twice a day
Use: For the treatment of mild to moderate dementia of Alzheimer's type
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.
What should I avoid while taking benzgalantamine?
Avoid drinking alcohol.
What other drugs will affect benzgalantamine?
Tell your doctor about all your other medicines, especially:
