CISplatin black cohosh

Applies to: cisplatin, black cohosh

GENERALLY AVOID: Preliminary data from an animal model suggest that black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa rhizome) may reduce the cytotoxic effect of cisplatin on breast cancer cells. Mouse mammary tumor cells exposed to a high concentration of black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa rhizome) (100 times the recommended dose) were found to be slightly more resistant to cisplatin than were cells treated with cisplatin alone or cisplatin plus vehicle. The clinical significance in humans is unknown.

MANAGEMENT: Until more data are available, investigators of the study suggest that patients with breast cancer be discouraged from taking black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa rhizome).
