Reason for the Shortage

  • Purdue reports a delay in packaging for some of their products.
  • Several manufacturers of Senna and Senna-S voluntarily recalled specific lot numbers of their products due to undeclared lactose and tartaric acid content.  Companies who initiated the recall included Purdue Products, Teva, Watson, Concord, and Major.
  • Ranbaxy and Amneal Pharmaceuticals discontinued their senna products.
  • Senna products are available over-the-counter and are not prescription products.

Senna Tablets

  • Cypress has available their Senna tablets in 100 count (NDC 60258-0950-01) bottles.
  • Major has available Senna tablets in 100 count (NDC 00904-5165-59), 100 count unit-dose (NDC 00904-5165-61), and 1000 count (NDC 00904-5165-80) sizes. The company has discontinued Senna syrup 8.8 mg/5 mL in 240 mL bottles.
  • Purdue has available Senokot tablets in 20 (NDC 67618-0300-20), 50 (NDC 67618-0300-50), and 100 (NDC 67618-0300-10) count package sizes and in 100 count UD (NDC 67618-0300-11). Senokotxtra in 12 count (NDC 67618-0315-12) and 36 count (NDC 67618-0315-36) are available. Senokot tablets 100 count unit dose and Senokotxtra in 36 count are on back order and the company cannot estimate a release date.
  • Qualitest has available Senna-Lax caplets in 100 (NDC 00603-0282-21) and 1000 (NDC 00603-0282-32) count bottles.
  • Teva has Senna-gen tablets available in 100 count (NDC 00182-1093-01) and 1000 count (NDC 00182-1093-01) bottles. Senna-gen 100 count unit dose tablets have been discontinued.
  • Watson has available Senexon 8.6 mg tablets in 100 (NDC 00536-5904-01) and 1000 count (NDC 00536-5904-10) bottles and Senexon liquid 8.8 mg/5 mL in 237 mL bottles (NDC 00536-1275-59).

Senna Plus Docusate Sodium Tablets

  • Cypress has available Senna-S in 60 count (NDC 60258-0951-06) bottles.
  • Major has available Senna-Plus (senna and docusate) in 60 (NDC 00904-5512-52), 100 (NDC 00904-5512-61), and 1000 (NDC 00904-5512-80) count bottles.
  • Purdue has available Senokot-S tablets in 10 (NDC 67618-0310-01), 30 (NDC 67618-0310-30), and 60 (NDC 67618-0310-60) count sizes. They also have Pericolace in 10 (NDC 67618-0106-10), 30 (NDC 67618-0106-30), and 60 (NDC 67618-0106-60) count sizes. Senokot-S in the 100 count unit dose is currently not being manufactured. Senokot-S 1000 count bottles have been discontinued.
  • Qualitest has SennaLax-S available in 100 (NDC 00603-0283-21) and 1000 (NDC 00603-0283-32) count bottles.
  • Teva’s Senna-S product in 100 count (NDC 00182-1113-01) and 1000 count (NDC 00182-1113-10) bottles are available.  Senna-S in 100 count unit dose packaging will be discontinued.
  • Watson’s Senna-S tablets in 100 count  (NDC 00536-0355-01) and 1000 (NDC 00536-0355-10) count bottles are available.
