Drug Interactions between eltrombopag and interferon alfa-2b

For patients with chronic hepatitis C, using eltrombopag together with interferon alfa-2b may worsen liver function and increase liver problems. The risk is greatest in patients who already have advanced liver disease or cirrhosis. Liver failure may occur, resulting in complications like ascites (accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity), hepatic encephalopathy (confusion, altered consciousness, or coma due to accumulation of toxic substances in the bloodstream), variceal hemorrhage (bleeding in the esophagus or stomach due to dilated veins), and bacterial peritonitis (infection of the inner abdominal wall lining). Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may already be aware of the risks, but has determined that this is the best course of treatment for you and is monitoring you closely for any potential complications. You should seek immediate medical attention if you have fever, chills, joint pain or swelling, unusual bleeding or bruising, skin rash, itching, loss of appetite, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark colored urine, light colored stools, and/or yellowing of the skin or eyes, as these may be signs and symptoms of liver damage. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
