Interactions between your drugs

Moderate

codeine pheniramine

Applies to: codeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate and codeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate

Using codeine together with pheniramine may increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating. Some people, especially the elderly, may also experience impairment in thinking, judgment, and motor coordination. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with these medications. Also avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medications affect you. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

sodium citrate multivitamin, prenatal

Applies to: codeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate and Natachew (multivitamin, prenatal)

By reducing the acidity level in the stomach, medications like sodium citrate may interfere with the absorption of multivitamin, prenatal into the bloodstream and reduce its effectiveness. If you require treatment with both medications, it is recommended that you take multivitamin, prenatal at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after sodium citrate to help minimize the impact of the interaction. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Drug and food interactions

Moderate

pheniramine food

Applies to: codeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate

Alcohol can increase the nervous system side effects of pheniramine such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with pheniramine. Do not use more than the recommended dose of pheniramine, and avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medication affects you. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.

Moderate

multivitamin, prenatal food

Applies to: Natachew (multivitamin, prenatal)

Food may reduce the absorption and blood levels of multivitamin, prenatal. In addition, some oral medications can also interfere with multivitamin, prenatal absorption into the bloodstream, which may make the medication less effective in treating your condition. Likewise, multivitamin, prenatal may interfere with the absorption of other orally administered medications. You should take multivitamin, prenatal on an empty stomach at least one hour before or two hours after a meal. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about how to take this or other medications you are prescribed. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

codeine food

Applies to: codeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate

Do not use alcohol or medications that contain alcohol while you are receiving treatment with codeine. This may increase nervous system side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, difficulty concentrating, and impairment in thinking and judgment. In severe cases, low blood pressure, respiratory distress, fainting, coma, or even death may occur. With certain long-acting formulations of narcotic pain medication, consumption of alcohol may also cause rapid release of the drug, resulting in high blood levels that may be potentially lethal. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions on how to take this or other medications you are prescribed. Do not use more than the recommended dose of codeine, and avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medication affects you. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medication without first talking to your doctor.

phenylephrine food

Applies to: codeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate

MONITOR: Coadministration of two or more sympathomimetic agents may increase the risk of adverse effects such as nervousness, irritability, and increased heart rate. Central nervous system (CNS) stimulants, particularly amphetamines, can potentiate the adrenergic response to vasopressors and other sympathomimetic agents. Additive increases in blood pressure and heart rate may occur due to enhanced peripheral sympathetic activity.

MANAGEMENT: Caution is advised if two or more sympathomimetic agents are coadministered. Pulse and blood pressure should be closely monitored.
