Interactions between your drugs

Major

carBAMazepine ceritinib

Applies to: Carnexiv (carbamazepine) and Zykadia (ceritinib)

CarBAMazepine may significantly reduce the blood levels of ceritinib, which may make the medication less effective in treating your cancer. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Drug and food interactions

Major

ceritinib food

Applies to: Zykadia (ceritinib)

Do not consume grapefruit or grapefruit juice during treatment with ceritinib unless directed otherwise by your doctor. Grapefruit juice can increase the blood levels of ceritinib to dangerous levels, increasing the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious. Other, more common side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) may also increase. You should seek immediate medical attention if you develop sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, shortness of breath, or heart palpitations during treatment with ceritinib. Food may also increase the blood levels of ceritinib. Therefore, you should take ceritinib on an empty stomach, meaning no food should be eaten for at least two hours before or after taking ceritinib. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

carBAMazepine food

Applies to: Carnexiv (carbamazepine)

You should preferably avoid the regular consumption of grapefruits and grapefruit juice while taking carBAMazepine. This can cause carBAMazepine levels to increase. You should report signs of carBAMazepine side effects such as nausea, visual disturbances, dizziness, or muscle weakness to your doctor. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with carBAMazepine. Alcohol can increase the nervous system side effects of carBAMazepine such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.

Moderate Moderately clinically significant. Usually avoid combinations; use it only under special circumstances.
Minor Minimally clinically significant. Minimize risk; assess risk and consider an alternative drug, take steps to circumvent the interaction risk and/or institute a monitoring plan.
Unknown No interaction information available.
