This report displays the potential drug interactions for the following 2 drugs:

Edit list (add/remove drugs)

Interactions between your drugs

Moderate

methenamine calcium carbonate

Applies to: MSP-Blu (hyoscyamine / methenamine / methylene blue / phenyl salicylate) and calcium carbonate / risedronate

Calcium carbonate may reduce the effectiveness of methenamine in treating your condition. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

calcium carbonate phenyl salicylate

Applies to: calcium carbonate / risedronate and MSP-Blu (hyoscyamine / methenamine / methylene blue / phenyl salicylate)

Using calcium carbonate together with phenyl salicylate may decrease the effects of phenyl salicylate. Contact your doctor if your condition changes. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

calcium carbonate risedronate

Applies to: calcium carbonate / risedronate and calcium carbonate / risedronate

Risedronate and calcium carbonate should not be taken orally at the same time. Products that contain magnesium, aluminum, calcium, iron, and/or other minerals may interfere with the absorption of risedronate into the bloodstream and reduce its effectiveness. You should take calcium carbonate at least 30 minutes after the risedronate dose. Talk to a healthcare professional if you are not sure whether a product contains something that could potentially interact with your medication or if you have questions on how to take this or other medications you are prescribed. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

phenyl salicylate risedronate

Applies to: MSP-Blu (hyoscyamine / methenamine / methylene blue / phenyl salicylate) and calcium carbonate / risedronate

Talk to your doctor before using risedronate together with phenyl salicylate. If you take a medication like risedronate by mouth, combining it with phenyl salicylate may increase your risk of developing gastrointestinal ulcers and bleeding. Contact your doctor immediately if you develop severe abdominal pain, bloating, sudden dizziness or lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting (especially with blood), loss of appetite, and/or black, tarry stools. On the other hand, if you receive a medication like risedronate by IV infusion, you may have an increased risk of kidney problems if you also use phenyl salicylate on a regular or long-term basis. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. You should seek medical attention if you experience signs and symptoms that may suggest kidney damage such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, increased or decreased urination, sudden weight gain or weight loss, fluid retention, swelling, shortness of breath, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, confusion, and irregular heart rhythm. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids if you develop diarrhea or vomiting during treatment with these medications, as dehydration can also affect the kidney. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Drug and food interactions

Moderate

calcium carbonate food

Applies to: calcium carbonate / risedronate

Calcium absorption may be increased by taking it with food. However, foods high in oxalic acid (spinach or rhubarb), or phytic acid (bran and whole grains) may decrease calcium absorption. Calcium may be taken with food to increase absorption. Consider spacing calcium administration for at least 2 hours before or after consuming foods high in oxalic acid or phytic acid. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

risedronate food

Applies to: calcium carbonate / risedronate

Food may reduce the absorption of risedronate, which may lead to lower blood levels of the medication and possibly reduced effectiveness. You should take risedronate first thing in the morning, at least 30 minutes before you eat or drink anything or take any other medication. Take each dose with a full glass (6 to 8 ounces) of water, and use only plain water (not mineral or vitamin water). Do not take risedronate if you cannot sit upright or stand for at least 30 minutes. Because risedronate can cause irritation and ulcer in the stomach or esophagus (the tube that connects your mouth and stomach), you will need to stay upright for at least 30 minutes after taking this medication. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions on how to take this or other medications you are prescribed. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

hyoscyamine food

Applies to: MSP-Blu (hyoscyamine / methenamine / methylene blue / phenyl salicylate)

Ask your doctor before using hyoscyamine together with ethanol. Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking hyoscyamine. You should be warned not to exceed recommended dosages and to avoid activities requiring mental alertness. If your doctor prescribes these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment to safely take this combination. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Major Highly clinically significant. Avoid combinations; the risk of the interaction outweighs the benefit.
Moderate Moderately clinically significant. Usually avoid combinations; use it only under special circumstances.
Minor Minimally clinically significant. Minimize risk; assess risk and consider an alternative drug, take steps to circumvent the interaction risk and/or institute a monitoring plan.
