Disinfectants containing benzalkonium chloride topical should not be used for skin preparation before injections. Povidone iodine (Betadine), other skin disinfectants that contain iodine, or alcohol skin preparations are safe for use and are recommended. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
