Drug Interactions between aminophylline / ephedrine / phenobarbital / potassium iodide and Cozaar
This report displays the potential drug interactions for the following 2 drugs:
- aminophylline/ephedrine/phenobarbital/potassium iodide
- Cozaar (losartan)
Interactions between your drugs
potassium iodide losartan
Applies to: aminophylline / ephedrine / phenobarbital / potassium iodide and Cozaar (losartan)
Talk to your doctor before using potassium iodide together with losartan. Combining these medications may significantly increase potassium levels in the blood. High levels of potassium can develop into a condition known as hyperkalemia, which in severe cases can lead to kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest. You may be more likely to develop hyperkalemia while using these medications if you are elderly, dehydrated, or have kidney disease, diabetes, or advanced heart failure. Regular or long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or naproxen (Aleve) may also increase your risk. It is important that you maintain adequate fluid intake during treatment with these medications. In addition, talk to your doctor to see if you should limit consumption of potassium-rich foods such as tomatoes, raisins, figs, potatoes, lima beans, bananas, plantains, papayas, pears, cantaloupes, mangoes, and potassium-containing salt substitutes. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. You should seek medical attention if you experience nausea, vomiting, weakness, confusion, tingling of the hands and feet, feelings of heaviness in the legs, a weak pulse, or a slow or irregular heartbeat, as these may be symptoms of hyperkalemia. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
PHENobarbital aminophylline
Applies to: aminophylline / ephedrine / phenobarbital / potassium iodide and aminophylline / ephedrine / phenobarbital / potassium iodide
Using PHENobarbital together with aminophylline may decrease the effects of aminophylline. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or if you experience breathing difficulties. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
ePHEDrine aminophylline
Applies to: aminophylline / ephedrine / phenobarbital / potassium iodide and aminophylline / ephedrine / phenobarbital / potassium iodide
Information for this minor interaction is available on the professional version.
PHENobarbital losartan
Applies to: aminophylline / ephedrine / phenobarbital / potassium iodide and Cozaar (losartan)
Information for this minor interaction is available on the professional version.
Drug and food interactions
PHENobarbital food
Applies to: aminophylline / ephedrine / phenobarbital / potassium iodide
Ask your doctor before using PHENobarbital together with ethanol, this can add to dizziness, drowsiness and other side effects of PHENobarbital. Be careful if you drive or do activities that require you to be awake and alert. Talk with your doctor before using any medications together, or drinking alcohol with PHENobarbital. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
losartan food
Applies to: Cozaar (losartan)
If you are taking losartan you should avoid potassium-containing salt substitutes or over-the-counter potassium supplements without first talking to your doctor. This can cause high levels of potassium in your blood. High levels of potassium can cause weakness, irregular heartbeat, confusion, tingling of the extremities, or feelings of heaviness in the legs. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these symptoms.
In some patients grapefruits and grapefruit juice may decrease the efficacy of losartan. Grapefruits and grapefruit juice should be avoided if an interaction is suspected. Orange juice is not expected to interact.
ePHEDrine food
Applies to: aminophylline / ephedrine / phenobarbital / potassium iodide
Consumer information for this interaction is not currently available.
MONITOR: Coadministration of two or more sympathomimetic agents may increase the risk of adverse effects such as nervousness, irritability, and increased heart rate. Central nervous system (CNS) stimulants, particularly amphetamines, can potentiate the adrenergic response to vasopressors and other sympathomimetic agents. Additive increases in blood pressure and heart rate may occur due to enhanced peripheral sympathetic activity.
MANAGEMENT: Caution is advised if two or more sympathomimetic agents are coadministered. Pulse and blood pressure should be closely monitored.
