Edit list (add/remove drugs)

Interactions between your drugs

Moderate

PHENobarbital estradiol

Applies to: aminophylline / ephedrine / phenobarbital / potassium iodide and Climodien (estradiol)

PHENobarbital may reduce the blood levels and effects of estradiol. If you are using low-dose oral contraceptives, you may have an increased risk of breakthrough bleeding and unintended pregnancy. You should discuss the use of alternative or additional methods of birth control with your healthcare provider. If you take hormone replacement for menopause, notify your doctor if your medication is no longer controlling your symptoms or you experience abnormal bleeding. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

PHENobarbital aminophylline

Applies to: aminophylline / ephedrine / phenobarbital / potassium iodide and aminophylline / ephedrine / phenobarbital / potassium iodide

Using PHENobarbital together with aminophylline may decrease the effects of aminophylline. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or if you experience breathing difficulties. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

estradiol aminophylline

Applies to: Climodien (estradiol) and aminophylline / ephedrine / phenobarbital / potassium iodide

Estradiol may increase the blood levels and effects of aminophylline. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. Contact your doctor if you develop nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, restlessness, insomnia, seizures, heart palpitations, and/or irregular heartbeat, as these may be signs and symptoms of excessive aminophylline levels. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

ePHEDrine aminophylline

Applies to: aminophylline / ephedrine / phenobarbital / potassium iodide and aminophylline / ephedrine / phenobarbital / potassium iodide

Information for this minor interaction is available on the professional version.

Drug and food interactions

Major

PHENobarbital food

Applies to: aminophylline / ephedrine / phenobarbital / potassium iodide

Ask your doctor before using PHENobarbital together with ethanol, this can add to dizziness, drowsiness and other side effects of PHENobarbital. Be careful if you drive or do activities that require you to be awake and alert. Talk with your doctor before using any medications together, or drinking alcohol with PHENobarbital. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

MONITOR: Coadministration of two or more sympathomimetic agents may increase the risk of adverse effects such as nervousness, irritability, and increased heart rate. Central nervous system (CNS) stimulants, particularly amphetamines, can potentiate the adrenergic response to vasopressors and other sympathomimetic agents. Additive increases in blood pressure and heart rate may occur due to enhanced peripheral sympathetic activity.

MANAGEMENT: Caution is advised if two or more sympathomimetic agents are coadministered. Pulse and blood pressure should be closely monitored.
