Drug Interactions between Alkums and caffeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate / sodium salicylate
This report displays the potential drug interactions for the following 2 drugs:
- Alkums (calcium carbonate)
- caffeine/pheniramine/phenylephrine/sodium citrate/sodium salicylate
Interactions between your drugs
phenylephrine caffeine
Applies to: caffeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate / sodium salicylate and caffeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate / sodium salicylate
Consumer information for this interaction is not currently available.
MONITOR: Coadministration of two or more sympathomimetic agents may increase the risk of adverse effects such as nervousness, irritability, and increased heart rate. Central nervous system (CNS) stimulants, particularly amphetamines, can potentiate the adrenergic response to vasopressors and other sympathomimetic agents. Additive increases in blood pressure and heart rate may occur due to enhanced peripheral sympathetic activity.
MANAGEMENT: Caution is advised if two or more sympathomimetic agents are coadministered. Pulse and blood pressure should be closely monitored.

calcium carbonate sodium salicylate
Applies to: Alkums (calcium carbonate) and caffeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate / sodium salicylate
Using calcium carbonate together with sodium salicylate may decrease the effects of sodium salicylate. Contact your doctor if your condition changes. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
sodium salicylate sodium citrate
Applies to: caffeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate / sodium salicylate and caffeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate / sodium salicylate

Drug and food interactions
calcium carbonate food
Applies to: Alkums (calcium carbonate)
Calcium absorption may be increased by taking it with food. However, foods high in oxalic acid (spinach or rhubarb), or phytic acid (bran and whole grains) may decrease calcium absorption. Calcium may be taken with food to increase absorption. Consider spacing calcium administration for at least 2 hours before or after consuming foods high in oxalic acid or phytic acid. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
pheniramine food
Applies to: caffeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate / sodium salicylate
Alcohol can increase the nervous system side effects of pheniramine such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with pheniramine. Do not use more than the recommended dose of pheniramine, and avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medication affects you. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.
