Antitussives (applies to Chloraseptic Total Sore Throat+Cough Lozenges) psychiatric conditions

Moderate Potential Hazard, Moderate plausibility. Applicable conditions: Depression, Psychosis, Parkinsonism

Caution should be used when prescribing antitussives such as dextromethorphan and benzonatate in patients with psychiatric or emotional conditions. Isolated instances of bizarre behavior, including mental confusion and visual hallucinations have been reported in patients taking antitussives, specially when combined with other prescribed drugs such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

Benzocaine (applies to Chloraseptic Total Sore Throat+Cough Lozenges) methemoglobinemia

Moderate Potential Hazard, Moderate plausibility. Applicable conditions: G-6-PD Deficiency

Rarely, benzocaine has induced methemoglobinemia resulting in respiratory distress and cyanosis. Therapy with benzocaine should be administered cautiously to patients with or predisposed to methemoglobinemia. If life-threatening or severe methemoglobinemia develops, methylene blue infused at a dosage of 1 to 2 mg/kg body weight will rapidly reverse or improve the condition except in G-6-PD-deficient patients.
