zona pellucida

 

Definition: an extracellular coat, rich in glycoprotein, surrounding the oocyte; it contains microvilli of the oocyte and cellular processes of follicular cells and appears homogeneous and translucent under the light microscope.

Synonym(s): pellucid zone
