verruca vulgaris

 

Definition: a keratotic papilloma of the epidermis that occurs most frequently in young people as a result of localized infection by human papillomavirus, usually types 2 and 4; the lesions are of variable duration, eventually undergoing spontaneous regression, and are both exophytic and endophytic, with hyperkeratosis, parakeratosis, hypergranulosis, koilocytosis, and papillomatosis.

Synonym(s): common wart, infectious wart, verruca simplex, viral wart
