trichomycosis

Pronunciation: trik'o-mi-ko'sis

Definition: Term formerly used to mean any disease of the hair caused by a fungus; now synonymous with trichonocardiosis or trichomycosis axillaris. In present usage, trichomycosis is a misnomer because the causative agent of the disease is a nocardia (an entity intermediate between fungus and bacterium) or Corynebacterium and not a true fungus.

Synonym(s): trichomycetosis

[tricho- + G. mykes, fungus, + G. -osis, condition]
