Tetrahymena pyriformis

Pronunciation: tet'ra-hi'me-na pir'i-for'mis

Definition: A ciliate belonging to a large group characterized by three membranes on one side of the buccal cavity and one on the other; it somewhat resembles the paramecium and, like it, is readily cultured and used extensively for experimental studies.
