ß-galactosidase

Pronunciation: ga-lak'to-sid'as

Definition: An enzyme that hydrolyzes the ß-galactoside linkage in lactose-producing glucose and galactose; also hydrolyzes the chromogenic substrate IPTG (isopropylthiogalactoside) and thus is used as an indicator of fused genes and gene expression.
