stratum spinosum epidermidis

 

Definition: the layer of polyhedral cells in the epidermis; shrinkage artifacts and adhesion of these cells at their desmosomal junctions gives a spiny or prickly appearance.

Synonym(s): prickle cell layer, spinous layer
