splanchnic nerve

 

Definition: one of the nerves supplying the viscera. There are three groups of splanchnic nerves: cardiopulmonary splanchnic nerves that convey postsynaptic sympathetic fibers to thoracic viscera; abdominopelvic nerves that convey presynpatic sympathetic fibers to the sympathetic ganglia of the abdominopelvic cavity; and pelvic splanchnic nerves that convey presynaptic parasympathetic fibers to the pelvic ganglia.
