silicosis

Pronunciation: sil-i-ko'sis

Definition: A form of pneumoconiosis resulting from occupational exposure to and inhalation of silica dust over a period of years; characterized by a slowly progressive fibrosis of the lungs, which may result in impairment of lung function; silicosis predisposes to pulmonary tuberculosis.

Synonym(s): pneumosilicosis, silicatosis, stone-mason's disease
