Definition: an abnormal, crescentic erythrocyte that is characteristic of sickle cell anemia, resulting from an inherited abnormality of hemoglobin (hemoglobin S) causing decreased solubility at low oxygen tension.

Synonym(s): crescent cell, drepanocyte, meniscocyte
