Shigella dysenteriae

 

Definition: a species causing severe necrotizing dysentery in humans induced by a virulent shiga toxin found only in feces of symptomatic individuals; the type species of the genus Shigella.

Synonym(s): Shiga bacillus, Shiga-Kruse bacillus
