Schwann cells

Pronunciation: shwahn

Definition: cells of ectodermal (neural crest) origin that compose a continuous envelope around each nerve fiber of peripheral nerves; such cells are comparable with the oligodendroglia cells of brain and spinal cord; like the latter, they may form membranous expansions that wind around axons and thus form the axon's myelin sheath.

Synonym(s): neurilemma cells, neurolemma cells
