retinopathy of prematurity


Definition: abnormal replacement of the sensory retina by fibrous tissue and blood vessels, occurring mainly in premature infants with a birth weight of less than 1500 g who are placed in a high-oxygen environment.

Synonym(s): retinopapillitis of premature infants, retrolental fibroplasia, Terry syndrome
