pteridine

Pronunciation: ter'i-den

Definition: a two-ring heterocyclic compound found as a component of pteroic acid and the pteroylglutamic acids (folic acids, pteropterin, etc.); simple pteridine derivatives (xanthopterin, leucopterin) occur as pigments in butterfly wings, whence the name.
