pseudomyxoma peritonei


Definition: the accumulation of large quantities of mucinous material in the peritoneal cavity, as a result of malignant cystic neoplasms of the ovary or appendix; it will frequently persist because of the growth of mucus-secreting cells scattered on serosal surfaces.

Synonym(s): gelatinous ascites
