trivial name for carotenoids exhibiting qualitatively the biologic activity of ß-carotene, vitamin A precursors (a-, ß-, and ?-carotene and cryptoxanthin); contained in fish liver oils, spinach, carrots, egg yolk, milk products, and other green leaf or yellow vegetables and fruits.
