Definition: the sympathetic ganglia (celiac, aorticorenal, and superior and inferior mesenteric) lying anterior to the vertebral column, as distinguished from the paravertebral ganglia of the sympathetic trunk; these prevertebral ganglia occur mostly around the origin of the major branches of the abdominal aorta; all are in the abdominopelvic cavity; the neurons that make up the ganglia send postsynaptic sympathetic fibers to abdominopelvic viscera through periarterial plexuses.
