Pronunciation: fi'so-stig'men

Definition: An alkaloid of physostigma; it is a reversible inhibitor of the cholinesterases and prevents destruction of acetylcholine; used as a cholinergic agent, and experimentally to enhance the action of acetylcholine at any of its sites of liberation.
