pharyngeal pouches

 

Definition: paired evaginations of embryonic pharyngeal endoderm, between the pharyngeal arches, extending toward the corresponding ectodermally lined pharyngeal grooves; during development they evolve into epithelial tissues and organs, such as thymus and thyroid glands.

Synonym(s): branchial pouches, endodermal pouches
