neural crest

 

Definition: neuroectodermal cells that originate in the dorsal aspect of the neural folds or neural tube. These cells leave the neural tube or folds and differentiate into various cell types including posterior-root ganglion cells; autonomic ganglion cells; the chromaffin cells of the suprarenal medulla; Schwann cells; sensory ganglia cells of cranial nerves V, IX, and X; part of the meninges; or integumentary pigment cells.
