Mycobacterium leprae

 

Definition: a bacterial species that causes Hansen disease (leprosy); an obligatory intracellular mycobacterium that has not been propagated in the laboratory but will survive in the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus).

Synonym(s): Hansen bacillus, leprosy bacillus
