The pathway of complement activation that comprises several proteins that in general involve carbohydrate recognition for binding; considered part of the innate immune response. By binding to pathogens via carbohydrates, these proteins provide an important protection to the host by activating the complement cascade and thus promoting the host's immune response to the pathogen
